Nadal talks about changing his 2020 schedules for the Olympics

Rafael Nadal officially confirmed that he will be participating in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He recently discussed his decision to adjust his calendar so he can fit the Olympics into his schedule.

In an interview after his Mexico Open victory, the Spaniard explained that getting another gold medal is a priority for him this year. Because of this, he is willing to rearrange his July and August schedule to accommodate a trip to Tokyo.

He will work with Marc Lopez to represent Spain in the men’s doubles. The two could come in as one of the favorites because of their amazing track record as partners in the tennis court.

His decision to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics means that he might have to avoid becoming part of some ATP tournaments. He has already mentioned the Los Cabos Open as among the games he may have to pull out from.

Rafael Nadal joins Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Rafael Nadal is not the only tennis superstar who will be making an appearance in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. His rivals Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic will also participate in this year’s biggest sporting event.

Federer is sure to be participating in the men’s singles category. It could be his last opportunity to grab a singles gold medal and complete a Golden Slam. The Swiss Maestro already holds a men’s doubles gold after a win in the 2008 Beijing Games. He won the medal with Stan Wawrinka, who represented Switzerland with him.

Novak Djokovic already confirmed that he will be playing in the men’s doubles category this year. He and Viktor Troicki will represent Serbia in the Games. Of the Big Three, Djokovic has the least impressive Olympic resume. He has only managed to land the bronze in the 2008 Beijing Games.

Nadal’s previous Olympics

The 2020 Tokyo Olympics is not the world no. 2’s first foray into the sporting world’s largest stage. Rafael Nadal has a stellar record in the past Olympics. The former world no. 1 earned his first and so far only men’s singles medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He brought down Chilean player Fernando Gonzalez in the Olympic final that year.

He was also supposed to participate in the 2012 London Olympics in the United Kingdom. However, he suffered from tendinitis in the second half of that year. It took him a long time to recover, which resulted in him withdrawing from competitions for the rest of 2012.

Nadal clinched another gold medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil. That time, he got the medal from his men’s doubles victory with Miguel Lopez against Romania.
