Rafael Nadal has had an incredible career over the last two decades. He has won 19 Grand Slam titles, accrued over $120 million dollars in prize money, and achieved the number one ranking multiple times. At 33-years-old, Nadal is now approaching the twilight of his career. He is still a favorite to win every tennis competition he plays in, but the thought of retiring could be on his mind over the next few years. The current world number two got married last year to his longtime girlfriend, Xisca Perello. When he eventually decides to put down his tennis racket, his coach, Carlos Moya, thinks he will be a busy man off the court.

Nadal and Moya’s relationship

A former player himself, Moya retired in 2010. He rose to the number one ranking in 1999 and won 20 career titles, including his only Grand Slam triumph at the French Open in 1998. During his playing days, Moya faced Nadal eight times and won twice. After he retired, the 43-year-old decided to pursue a coaching career and in 2016, Nadal hired him to be on his coach staff.

I don’t see him as a politician

Nadal has won five Grand Slam titles since he started working with Moya. He is now one title short of matching Roger Federer’s record of 20 major titles. The two have grown very fond of each other. In a recent interview with Spanish newspaper Las Provincias, Moya said he hoped Nadal could win more Grand Slam titles and break his rival’s record. When asked what his client’s life could be like after tennis, the Spanish coach revealed that his client would still be involved with the sport. “He will be presented with opportunities. It is clear that he will continue to be linked to the sport. I honestly do not see him as a politician.” Moya added that the former world number one has already built a great legacy in the game. “He has his academy next to his house, which is going to be his legacy to tennis and he will surely enjoy it.”

The Rafael Nadal Academy in Manacor is an initiative by Nadal to develop tennis in Spain. The 19-time Grand Slam champion recently a branch to the academy in Kuwait. On the court, his bid for his 20th major title failed last month after he lost in the Australian Open quarterfinals to Dominic Thiem.
