Federer, Del Potro reach the 2012 WTF semifinals – Youtube

Delpo did it again! After defeating Roger in this year’s Basel final, now he beats Roger also in London.

This win gives the chance to Delpo to qualify for the semifinals where he is going to play against Djokovic. In the other semifinal Federer will play Murray.

Del Potro – Federer 7-6 (3) 4-6 6-3

The match was a 2 hour battle with not much difference between the two. No breaks in the opening set that Delpo won at the tiebreak. After losing the first one, Juan Marting won 6 consecutive points to have a decisive lead in the tiebreak and winning at 3.

In the second set Roger did step up at the very beginning to win 8 consecutive points and have an early 2-0 lead. Then it was just about holding serve and going to the decider.

Same story in the third set but at “inverted players” as it was Delpo to win the first 2 games, hold serve and win the decider 6-3.

From Delpo

“It’s a surprise for me now. I just was thinking about my game, trying to beat him and go to the semis. Here I am feeling confidence with my game. My serve is working really well. Maybe the surface helps to play short rallies, to be aggressive all the time. That, for my game, is a very good advantage.”

From Roger

“I had a good feeling going into the match,” said Federer. “It was definitely the right game plan. I broke him very easily all of a sudden at the beginning of the second. Thought I was a bit of a better player in the first maybe. Next thing you know, it’s like a struggle at the end of the second, I didn’t really get into his serves any more in the third.”

“But the important thing is to move on right now, to be quite honest, not talk too much about this match for me. Mentally, it’s important to look ahead and rest because it’s a quick turnaround for tomorrow. I tried everything I could and was a bit frustrated at times, but it shouldn’t affect me tomorrow.”

Ferrer – Tipsarevic 4-6 6-3 6-1

Unlucky David. The Spaniard defeated Janko, but he wasn’t able to get to the semifinals because of the set record (Delpo is 5-3 up while David is 4-4). The match was 2 hours and 7 minutes long. Since David didn’t have a chance to qualify for the semis after Delpo’s win, this match was about glory and… ah yes… 200 ATP points and  $130.000 (no bad).

Ferrer commented “I began very badly. But in the second set, I played better and I won the match. It was important because I have more points and it’s good for the next year.”
