Serena Williams coach Mouratoglou impressed by Coco Gauff's learning skills

Coco Gauff has been impressive on the WTA tour this season. The 15-year-old broke into the spotlight at this year’s Wimbledon where she had a spectacular run. The American teenager reached the round of 16 at the tournament before losing to the eventual champion Simon Halep. Gauff also won her first singles title last month. Her impressive season has highlighted her enormous potential.

Gauff a quick learner

Serena William’s coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, has spoken about Gauff’s season and the traits that make her stand out. The 46-year-old recently described his experience working with Gauff. The American teenager has been working with the tennis coach at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy since she was ten years old. He said that even at that young age, Gauff was an incredible competitor. She would record victories over players more technically gifted that her. He said he was impressed with the speed with which she grasped tennis concepts. Serena’s coach wrote that while most players forget their instructions after the first lesson, the 15-year-old applies a concept and it stays with her. In the article, Mouratoglou declared that there was no limit to her potential.

She still has a lot of work to do

He also noted that Gauff has continued to perform well despite the increased expectations since her Wimbledon appearance. Mouratoglou said that while she has a bright future, it was important to manage expectations. “She still has a lot of work to do and we can’t expect her to perform as she did at Wimbledon every time she plays.” The Greek coach also praised Gauff’s parents, Corey, and Candi for supporting their daughter’s dreams. He revealed that unlike most tennis parents, they allowed Gauff to have a normal life like other teenage girls.

Gauff has received some financial support and tennis training since joining Mouratoglou’s academy. She works with coach Jean-Christophe Faurel on a fulltime basis. Her father also travels with her during tournaments and continues to have input in her career. The 15-year-old won her first WTA title at the Linz Open in Austria last month. She defeated Kiki Bertens in the quarterfinals to notch her first victory over a player ranked in the top ten. In the final, she beat 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko. Her victory at the tournament saw her break into the top 100. She is currently 69th on the WTA rankings. She will automatically qualify for the opening rounds of the Australian Open next season.
