Zverev impressed Federer. Medvedev next in Shanghai

Sascha Zverev and Roger Federer in Shanghai

Sascha Zverev is “officially” back!

The German seemed to have found his confidence soon after bringing the decisive point during the last Laver Cup. Later, Sascha had a good run in Beijing where he reached the semifinal before losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas and he is again in the final 4 in Shanghai after defeating Roger Federer following an outstanding performance.

Why Federer was so impressed by Sascha

Zverev looked rock solid against the Swiss. The German was having some problems with his serve in his recent matches, but he had no hesitations against Roger. In addition, he was incredibly strong when dealing with the disappointment of not being able to convert 5 match points in the 2nd set. Sascha had 3 of them when he was on serve and leading 40-0.

During the press conference following their match, Federer revealed what he said to Zverev at the net:

“I told him at the net that he showed great character, that he was strong. I thought he didn’t show any frustrations or too much negativity.

I didn’t see him very often being extremely frustrated except the one time when he hit three let cords in a row, the last game I think it was. That was impressive because he has tendencies to get a bit down on himself. Especially this season, he hasn’t been playing maybe so well, so that impressed me the most. If I can get one percent of that, I’m happy, too.”

H2H Alexander Zverev vs. Matteo Berrettini

Sascha will face Matteo Berrettini in the semifinal. The Italian pulled another upset after beating Dominic Thiem 7-6 (8) 6-4. The head to head is 1-all, but they have never played each other on hard courts. They clashed only on clay and in the same round of the same tournament. That was in the second round in Rome in 2018 and 2019.
