With the possibility of Nadal’s absence, Medvedev may have to take on Djokovic and Federer. What are his chances of winning the Shanghai Masters?

With the hopes of moving upward in the world rankings, Daniil Medvedev is getting ready for this week’s Shanghai Masters event. The world no. 4, who ended up as the runner-up in last month’s U.S. Open, is looking forward to challenging the dominance of players like Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in the tournaments.

When he arrived, Medvedev was greeted warmly by organizers of the tournament. Event director Michael Luevano personally went to the airport to welcome him into the city.

Medvedev results in 2019 and Shanghai

The Russian is having a magnificent year in the courts this 2019. When he battled for the title in the U.S. Open last month, it was actually his first Grand Slam final in his career.

He also clinched three tournament wins in the ATP Tour this year. The most prominent of these wins is the ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati event in August. He also brought home the title from the Sofia Open and the St. Petersburg Open. Apart from that, he reached the finals in five other tournaments, including the U.S. Open, Barcelona Open and the Rogers Cup.

Medvedev lost to Federer last year in Shanghai

It can be recalled that Federer and Medvedev had a pretty thrilling game in last year’s Shanghai Masters. The Swiss star eventually won the match but not before getting a real workout from the then-Japan Open winner.

After the match, Federer complimented the Russian for his performance. He said that Daniil proved during their match why he is one of the brightest hopes of tennis’ future.

Will Nadal play in Shanghai ahead of his wedding with Xisca Perello?

As of now, it is not clear yet whether Rafael Nadal will be participating in the Shanghai Masters. If he wants to retain his no. 1 ranking in the Race to London, the maximum 1000 points he might get would be a good boost to his chances.

Right now, the Spanish tennis star has a comfortable edge over the no. 2 player, Novak Djokovic. 1960 points are separating the two tennis icons, which will be difficult, but not impossible, to close.

Nadal, however, may be playing it smart by not competing in the Asian tournaments. After all, he currently has an injury in his left hand that may affect his game.

There is another good reason for Nadal to skip the next few tournaments. It has been reported that the Spanish player is set to wed his fiancé and long-time girlfriend Xisca Perello on October 19. The wedding date is a week after the end of the Shanghai tournament. Nadal may want to look and feel his best during the wedding.
