Zverev falls to Gulbis and illness

Ernests Gulbis his finding his way back.

Now ranked no.138, the Latvian had to go through the qualifications in Wimbledon to win his 6 matches after beating Sascha Zverev in the 3rd round.

After leading 2 sets to 1, the German disappeared completely in the last 2 sets to win just 3 games. The final score was 7-6 (2) 4-6 5-7 6-3 6-0.

What happened to Zverev

After the match, the German confessed that he was struggling with his stomach as he didn’t eat anything for 24 hours. Sascha commented

“It felt like somebody just unplugged me in the middle of the fourth set. There was no going back for me.

No doubt about it, he’s playing well. Getting through the qualifiers gave him a lot of confidence. And I actually thought I didn’t play that bad. I just started to feel very tired.”

I noticed he was getting tired

Gulbis commented

“I saw that he was getting tired in the fifth set. I was feeling physically really good. I started to play smarter. I tried to move him more. I realized that he was getting tired.”

Next vs. Nishikori

Gulbis will play Kei Nishikori in the 4th round. The head to head is 1-0 for the Japanese, but the Latvian may be considered as the favorite in this contest if he has some more fuel in his tank.
