Wawrinka beats Dimitrov in blockbuster 1st round

Stan Wawrinka vs. Grigor Dimitrov was the blockbuster match in the opening day in Wimbledon.

The Bulgarian was definitely the favorite because he is generally more comfortable on grass and also because the Swiss is still trying to stage a proper comeback after last year’s operations.

Everything was pointing to an easy win for Grigor after he won the opener 6-1. When Wawrinka won the 2nd set, it looked as the Bulgarian was still in pole position to win the contest. In fact, Dimitrov got a strong 5-2 lead in the 3rd set, but eventually, it was Stan to break back his opponent in the 9th game (5-4) before winning 7-6. The 4th set became a dogfight with both players struggling to hold their serve. Eventually, the decisive break came in the 10th game, and Wawrinka won the match 1-6 7-6 (3) 7-6 (5) 6-4.

It’s a great feeling to win this match on Centre Court. WAWRINKA

After the match, Stan commented

“It is a great feeling to win a match like that on Centre Court. To be here and to move that well, felt good. Grigor is a tough opponent to beat. I knew it would be a tough match. My goal was to fight and focus on my game and to always improve during the match, so happy to win like that.

There have been some tough months mentally, so it is a big surprise to play that well after losing the first set. I knew I would be nervous, but I have been practicing so hard to play at that level. “The atmosphere was amazing, so I am really happy.”

Next vs. Fabbiano

Stan will face the world no. 133 Thomas Fabbiano in the 2nd round. They have never played each other so far.

A GOOD WIN!
