Kvitova triumphs in Madrid

Petra Kvitova is getting better and better.

The Czech had another fantastic run to win a back to back title in Madrid just 1 week after triumphing in the home tournament in Prague.

The final

The world no. 10 had to work hard in the final in Spain before beating the world no. 20 Kiki Bertens in almost 3 hours.

After exchanging the first 2 sets, Petra looked completely exhausted in the decider as this was her 11th match in 12 days. Eventually, Kvitova found her strengths to win the decisive break in the 8th game  (5-3) to finally conquer the contest after 2 hours and 52 minutes. The final score was 7-6 (6) 4-6 6-3.

I don’t know how I made it. KVITOVA

Talking about her physical condition and how she found the energy to win the match, she commented

“I have no idea [how I made it]. I was really thinking that I can’t do it anymore. But then, when you step on the shot again, you’re just trying to hit the return, you play the rally, the serves, whatever.”

This is Petra’s 24th title and the 4th of this season (the 3rd in Madrid). After this tournament, Petra will be ranked no.8 (from 9), but if she keeps on winning these titles, she has a clear shot at the very top of the rankings.
