Denis Shapovalov is one of the very few players in the world that has a winning record against Rafael Nadal. In fact, the Canadian has won the only match he played against the Spanish sensation last year in Montreal when he won 3-6 6-4 7-6 (4).

Shapovalov is now in Madrid where he has won the first round. During a recent interview, he confessed that he is learning from Nadal to comment
“I’ve been trying to pick up a lot from Rafa. He’s been dominating on the surface (clay) for more than 10, 12 years, so it’s great to see him play.
I’m trying to pick up on certain lefty things he does that bothers other guys, and I definitely think that’s helped me as well.
He plays so aggressively on it when he has a chance he goes for it. That’s what I was trying to do today, and it worked out well.”
