Swiatek targets progress with Roig ahead of 2027
Polish star Iga Swiatek remains committed to her partnership with coach Francisco Roig despite a demanding campaign that saw her miss out on qualification for the WTA Finals. The 25-year-old concluded her 2026 season at the WTA 1000 event in Wuhan, where she was eliminated in the semifinals by compatriot Maja Chwalińska.
Currently ranked ninth in the world, Swiatek began working with the 58-year-old Spanish mentor in April. While peak results have yet to materialize, the former coach of Rafael Nadal and Matteo Berrettini retains her full trust. The upcoming training block will serve as an essential period to assimilate his ideas before the competitive calendar resumes.
Building harmony for the long term
Speaking to Chinese reporters during her run in Wuhan, Swiatek explained that establishing complete understanding takes patience. Swiatek stated that “after a couple of months” a player begins to fully recognize a coach’s tactical philosophy, adding that “developing my game is a broader process” despite recent coaching changes.
Swiatek noted that initial discussions before partnering gave her insight into Roig’s perspective and character, praising his commitment to travel extensively and implement strategic adjustments. She also emphasized that maintaining a broader perspective provides calm during challenging weeks as they prepare for the 2027 campaign.
