Simona Halep won the Wimbledon title this year defeating Serena Williams 6-2 6-2 after playing a great final. The 23-time Grand Slam champion had been favored to win her 24th Grand Slam title. Halep, however, pulled an upset to win her second Grand Slam. The Romanian player began the year without a coach after parting ways with Darren Cahill at the end of 2018.
Why Cahill didn’t coach Simona Halep
Last year, Cahill and Halep parted ways amicably. The Australian coach stated that he needed a break to focus on his family. He said that the constant traveling with his tennis protégé had taken a toll on him. Simona accepted the situation and said she did not have any ill feelings towards his decision. Cahill had been the Romanian’s coach for four years. The pair enjoyed a lot of success together. Under his tutelage, she rose to number one on the ranking and won her maiden Grand Slam title at the French Open in 2018. After starting the year without a coach, Halep hired Daniel Dobre in May.
Back next season
The world No. 6 and Daniel had worked together earlier in her career. The 27-year-old won her second major title at Wimbledon with her current coach. Now after a break from the game, her former coach is ready to return to the game. Halep announced that Cahill had informed her that he will be available to coach in 2020. The former world number one posted the news on her Instagram account. In the post, she revealed that he would be back as her coach starting next season.
Simona has also revealed that though Cahill was not her coach at the time, he was still a big reason for her success at Wimbledon. The native Australian coach attended the event to support her from the stands and the 27-year-old expressed her appreciation. “As everyone knows, Darren was not very away from my career this year. He was in the background, helping me a lot, during Wimbledon the most. He is part of that success, for sure.” With her coach now returning, she has set herself some goals for next season. She admitted that though it would be difficult, her goal for the next year is to win all four major titles. “I have this possibility in my mind, I have to admit. I know it’s difficult, but after Wimbledon, I feel like everything is possible in this world.” Halep will be in action at the Wuhan Open this week.
