Round of 32 in Milan delivers unexpected eliminations

Tournament ninth seeds Juan Tello and Maxi Arce made an early departure as the Milano Premier Padel P1 round of 32 delivered high drama at the Allianz Cloud. The Argentinian pair started strongly and claimed the first set 6-2, but Xisco Gil and Rama Valenzuela exposed flaws in their game plan and gradually shifted the momentum. After more than 2 hours and 15 minutes, Gil and Valenzuela completed a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 comeback by winning the deciding tiebreak.

Several Argentinian players endured a challenging day. Among them were Sanyo Gutierrez and Maxi Sanchez Blasco, whose campaign ended sooner than expected despite an opening-set win, as Álex Ruiz and Javi Garcia came back to prevail 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Leading seeds cruise through their opening matches

Milan’s leading contenders responded to the earlier shocks with convincing performances. Second seeds Ale Galan and Fede Chingotto rebounded from their recent difficulties in Rotterdam and Düsseldorf by sweeping aside the Deus brothers 6-1, 6-2 in 55 minutes. World number 1 duo Agustin Tapia and Arturo Coello were similarly impressive, beating Ayats and Sanchez Chamero 6-3, 6-3 in only 58 minutes.

A 6-3, 6-2 victory over Solano and Pereyra also carried the Franco Stupaczuk and Mike Yanguas counterpart pairing Stupa and Sanz safely into the round of 16. Juan Lebron and Tino Augsburger then closed the day’s play by overcoming Quilez and Mouriño 7-6, 6-1 in straight sets.
