Shelton survives Hurkacz scare at US Open
Ben Shelton edged Hubert Hurkacz 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(3), 7-5 in the second round of the US Open after opening his campaign on Monday, August 31 with a 1-6, 6-1, 7-6(3), 6-2 victory over Tallon Griekspoor.
Celebration draws criticism
After closing out the tight match with Hurkacz, Shelton celebrated with a loud scream. That reaction prompted social media ridicule: one X user wrote “Acting like he won a Slam,” while another called Shelton’s behaviour “embarrassing,” and further tennis fans chimed in with similar responses.
Next up: Shapovalov
Shelton will face Canada’s Denis Shapovalov in the third round. Shapovalov reached this stage after victories over Miomir Kecmanovic and Luca Van Assche.
Head-to-head
- Shelton and Shapovalov have met four times, with Shelton winning all four encounters.
- Their most recent meeting occurred in 2026 at the Dallas Open, a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(4) win for Shelton.
