INJURED Halep storms in the Doha quarters

Simona Halep has another commanding performance in Doha to defeat the world no. 15 Anastasija Sevastova in straight sets.

Even if Simona had a not-so-great start in both sets, she managed to find the solution after conceding just 7 games. In the first set, Simona had to fight a 0-2 deficit before winning the opener 6-4. In the second set Simona was again 1 break down (2-3), but then he managed to win 4 consecutive games and win the match 6-4 6-3.

Soon after the contest, the Romanian admitted that she was extremely happy with her performance even if her ankle injury is still bothering her. The world on.2 commented

“I’m really glad that I could finish it in two sets and play like I played,” said Halep.  “I mean I’m really pleased with the way I played today and very confident.

Day-by-day I will see how it is and then I will decide if something is getting worse.”

 

The quest for no.1

If Simona is not outperformed in Doha by Caroline Wozniacki, she will regain the world no.1 rank. The Dane is still competing in the tournament, but she will have a tough quarter against Angelique Kerber.

If Caroline loses against Kerber, Halep will be the new world no.1 starting from next week even if she doesn’t win her next match. (see analysis)

 

The quarters vs. Bellis

Simona will face a surprising Cici Bellis in the quarters. The 18-year-old from America has upset Karolina Pliskova n the previous round 7-6 (4) 6-3. Simona and Cici have never played each other before.
