Nadal safe to the Australian Open 3rd round

Rafael Nadal has no problems to advance to the Australian Open 3rd round.

The world no.1 had a steady performance against Leonardo Mayer to win 6-3 6-4 7-6 (4). Probably the only awkward moment for the Spaniard was when he failed to serve out the match when he was leading 5-4 in the 3rd set to concede his first service game. Eventually, the seed no.1 won the following tiebreak at 4 without much struggle. Nadal won this match after 2 hours and 38 minutes.

After his win, Rafa commented

“It was an important victory for me. He is always a tough opponent. I had to hit some great shots in the tie-break. I’m happy to be in the third round after a while without being in competition.”

Next vs. Dzumhur

Rafa will face the world no. 30 Damir Dzumhur for a place in the 4th round. The head to head is 1-0 for Dzumhur that beat Rafa in Miami in 2016 after the Spaniard withdrew when he was 0-3 down in the decider.
