Kerber wins her 1st title since 2016

Angelique Kerber had a rather tormented 2017.

The former world no.1 was definitely not at her best to end the years with an unpleasant 28-23 win-loss record, and her rank collapsed to no.21.

The German has started the new season in grand style after she played a convincing Hopman Cup before winning the title in Sydney.

In the Sydney final, Angelique was utterly confident to beat an in-form Ashleigh Barty 6-4 6-4 after the Australian defeated her 6-3 6-4 in her last match of 2017.

After this match, Angelique leads Ashleigh 2-1 in head to head matches.

I am getting closer to my 2016 levels.

This is Angelique’s 11 career title, and she feels that her tennis is closer to the one he displayed in 2016 when she won 3 tournaments (2 slams), and she reached 5 finals. The German commented

“I have had a great week, and the final was not easy against Ash, but I was able to play my game in important moments. I feel like I am getting closer to my 2016 level.”

After this match, Kerber will fly to Melbourne for the Australian Open where she will face the world no.507 Ann-Lena Friedsam In the opener. The head to head is 1-0 for the German.
