Seeded no.1, Simona didn’t have a great experience last year in Shenzhen after she crashed out in the second round at the hands of a surprising Katerina Siniakova (that eventually won the tournament).
This year, the Romanian will face the world no. 110 Nicole Gibbs in the opener.
Simona needs to win this tournament in order to be sure she will retain the world no.1 rank.
Jelena Ostapenko
On the other side looms the seed no.2 Jelena Ostapenko that will face Kristina Pliskova in the first round. The head to head is 1-all.
If Jelena goes deep in the tournament, she may face Maria Sharapova in the semifinal. That would be an interesting one to watch.
