Shapovalov voted the best Canadian male athlete of the year

Denis Shapovalov has really captured the heart of his compatriots. The 18-year-old hasn’t won a slam (yet), but he has entertained the tennis community with his great way to play tennis and his character especially during the American summer after he reached the semifinal in Montreal and the 4th round at the US Open.

Recently, Shapovalov has been voted as the Tennis Canada’s Male Player of the Year, and now he makes one step forward to be named as the best Canadian male athlete of the year (Lionel Conacher Award).

About this award

Denis collected 31% of the votes (20) from a panel of 64 broadcasters and sports editors from Canada. Shapovalov collected just 1 vote more than Sidney Crosby, who led the Pittsburgh Penguins to a second straight Stanley Cup.

Denis’ reaction

Shapovalov commented

“To be honest, I’m a little overwhelmed to get this award, this huge honor. There are so many Canadian athletes that deserve it, so it’s honestly motivating me to keep going and work harder. I’m very happy.”

Much more to come.
