Emma Raducanu has announced her withdrawal from Wimbledon after scans confirmed a stress fracture in her lower leg. The British No. 1 had been managing discomfort since reaching the final at the Queen’s Championships earlier this month, but the injury worsened in the days leading up to her scheduled first‑round match against Croatian Antonia Ruzic.
A difficult decision
Raducanu revealed the news in a statement on social media, explaining that medical advice forced her to stop competing. “I can’t believe I’m saying this, but sadly I’ve had to withdraw from this year’s Wimbledon. I’ve done everything possible to try to get to the start line, but after a final scan tonight, the niggle I’ve been managing has developed into a stress fracture and I’ve been medically advised to stop pushing through. Playing at Wimbledon, in front of a home crowd, means everything to me, so this is really difficult to process,” she said.
Signs of trouble before the tournament
Concerns about Raducanu’s fitness had grown over the past week. She was spotted wearing a protective boot on Wednesday and later trained with strapping on her lower right leg. A practice session with Anna Kalinskaya was cut short, fueling speculation that she might not be ready for the Championships.
A season marked by setbacks
The stress fracture adds to a series of physical challenges Raducanu has faced this year. She missed much of the off‑season due to a foot injury, battled a virus through February, and skipped major WTA events in Miami, Madrid, and Rome. The leg issue had been present since the end of the clay‑court swing, making her Wimbledon withdrawal another blow in a difficult campaign.
Raducanu’s absence is a major disappointment for British fans, who had hoped to see her compete in front of a home crowd. Her focus now turns to recovery, with hopes of returning stronger later in the season.
