Bianca Andreescu has a street named after her: “Andreescu Way”

Bianca had a great honor back home

Canadian tennis Bianca Andreescu recently won the US Open against Serena Williams to become the first Canadian ever to win a Grand Slam title. Her historic achievement has made her a sensation in Canada as the country celebrates her success. Andreescu has received congratulation messages from her country-folks with famous rapper Drake and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau among the notable individuals to congratulate the 19-year-old on her most significant achievement yet.

“She the North” Rally

On Sunday, Andreescu received the key to the city and had a street named after her in her hometown of Mississauga. Thousands of fans turned up to attend the event dubbed “She the North Rally” to celebrate Andreescu maiden Grand Slam title in her hometown. Andreescu was born in Canada and grew up in Mississauga after her parents moved to Canada from Romania. Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie unveiled the “Andreescu Way” street sign.

She commended Andreescu for her win. “Your graceful and most modest approach to embracing your success has embodied both Mississauga, Ontario, and Canada. And your family is like so many others in Mississauga, a true immigrant success story.” The permanent location of the street will be determined later.

Proud to represent Canada

Andreescu said she was honored to represent Canada and urged the fans to pursue their dreams. “I’m a proud Canadian and proud to represent this country all around the world and very humbled to celebrate this moment with you. If I can do it, if Serena can do it, if Roger can do it, if the Raptors can do it, so can you.” Bianca has had an incredible 2019 season winning her first US Open as well as the Rogers Cup and Indian Wells tournaments. Her success has seen her move up in the rankings and she is currently the world no.5.

Example to young people

Mississauga Mayor Crombie said Andreescu had inspired young players in Canada to take up the sport and dream of success. “It’s a tremendous achievement. It’s also an example to young people everywhere just what you can achieve if you work hard. She has inspired other young players to play tennis or chase their dream, she has shown what you can achieve.” Andreescu will be the second person to receive Mississauga’s key to the city with the first being former Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion. Crombie said of the honor, “We really want to honor her. She is our girl from Mississauga, but she is also all of Canada’s girl.”
