Dimitrov beats Thiem after epic

Grigor Dimitrov wins the first match at the Finals after defeating Dominic Thiem in an extremely tough contest.

The Bulgarian looked in full control of the match after he won the opening set 6-4 playing an extremely solid tennis.  In the second set Dominic put up a fierce fight, and he took advantage of a sloppy service game from his opponent at the end of the set to bring the affair to the 3rd.

The decider became a thriller; in fact, once more Dimitrov looked in control of the situation after he broke Dominic in the 7th game (4-3) before grabbing a strong 5-3 lead. The drama unfolded in the 10th game when Dimitrov failed to serve-out the match (from 5-4 to 5-5); Thiem seemed to have a shot at the match, but then it was the Austrian to bend and lose his service at love. Dimitrov had another chance to serve out the contest (6-5); he wasn’t able to convert 2 consecutive match points (40-15), but eventually, he kept his nerve to win the match 6-4 5-7 7-5 in 2 hours and 21 minutes.

It’s big for me and my country. DIMITROV

Grigor was thrilled after this win to comment

“It’s not only big for me; I think it’s for my whole country, for Bulgaria. It’s great for me to show that everything is possible. You push the boundaries, doesn’t matter where you’re from, it’s all up to you, everything is in your hands. Basically whatever you put in is what you get.”

After this win, the Bulgarian leads the group with David Goffin that has beaten Rafael Nadal in the same group. The feeling is that Grigor will be one of the top contenders for the title.
