Wozniacki wins the WTA finals

Caroline Wozniacki ends her impressive run in Singapore with a fantastic title.

The former world no.1 had a smashing start of the week in the city-state to trash both Elina Svitolina (6-2 6-0) and the world no.1 Simona Halep (6-0 6-2) in the first 2 matches. Then, Caroline lost the third encounter of the round robin against Caroline Garcia after she bagelled (6-0) the Frenchwoman in the opening set. Eventually, the Dane qualified for the semis, and she defeated Karoline Pliskova in straight set 7-6 (9) 6-3 to access the last act of the tournament.

The final

Wozniacki kept her form also during the final against a surprising Venus Williams. Even if Caroline, seemed to be much better than Venus on the baseline, the American managed to stay with the Dane until the very end of the first set before she lost the opener 6-4. The rule of the game for Williams was to be over-aggressive to avoid engaging in long rallies against her opponent. But, the American didn’t manage to remain aggressive in the second set, and she found herself trailing on a 0-5 scoreline. When Venus looked doomed, she started to hit the ball more freely, and she won the following 4 games (5-4). At that point, the match became a thriller, but it was Wozniacki to break Venus for the 6 times to win the match 6-4 6-4.

I am still shaking

This was Wozniacki’ s most prestigious title. Soon after the match, Caroline commented

“I’m still shaking. I was up 5-0, everything was going well, and all of a sudden, Venus just starts upping her game. She went for her shots, she started serving to my body, and I’m just so happy that I managed to win in the end.”

“Eight is my lucky number!” the Dane conceded as she lost all her previous matches against Venus. “I was hoping that if I’m going to beat her, at least once in my career, it has to be today.  I just went out there, and I just did my best.”

After this week Caroline will be ranked no.3, and she has a clear shot at becoming the new world no.1 in the new season.
