Roger Federer keeps on marching toward his 100th career title. The Swiss Legend edges a rough Juan Martin Del Potro in the Basel final to win his 8th title at the home tournament, the 7th of 2017, and the 95th of his unique career.

The final

Roger had to fight a fierce battle against Del Potro in the final. In the opening set, the world no.2 couldn’t capitalize on a 1-break-up lead conquered in the 1st (1-0) and in the 9th (5-4) game to be broken back soon after on both occasions. Federer also squandered a 3-0 lead in the following breaker to conceded 6 consecutive points (3-6) before surrendering the set.

Roger and Juan Martin engaged in another battle also in the second set and only a break in the 10th game (6-4) gave the opportunity to Federer to bring the affair to the decider.

Federer surrendered his serve in the very first game of the 3rd set (0-1), but then he managed to win the following 4 to conquer a decisive 4-1 lead. Then, the rule of the game was “just” holding serve, and the Swiss won the match 6-7 (5) 6-4 6-3.

We were both tired

After the match, Roger commented

“I think we’re both tired from a long season. Plus he’s been playing four straight weeks now, very successful, so we tried to give it all we had.

The crowd really enjoyed themselves, and at the end, there is always going to be a winner unfortunately in tennis. But I think we both can be very happy with the week today.”

After the match, Federer confirmed he will not play the last ATP1000 in Paris to focus on the ATP Finals.
