Witthoeft wins maiden title in Luxemburg

Carina Witthoeft wins her maiden title in Luxembourg after a fantastic run.

Currently ranked no.73, the German had to work hard this week. She defeated Varvara Lepchenko in a rough 3 setter in the first round (7-6 2-6 7-6), then she dismissed Evgeniya Rodina and Kiki Bertens in straight sets before winning another tough battle in 3 sets against Pauline Parmentier.

The final

The final against Monica Puig was a bit of a roller coaster. The German was 1 break down in the opener (2-3) before conquering the following 4 games and win the opener 6-3). In the second set, Carina grabbed a 4-1 lead (2 breaks up), but then she dropped her serve twice (5-5) after she failed to serve out for the match when she was leading 5-4. Carina broke Monica again in the 11th game (6-5) to finally clinch this final. The result was 6-3 7-5.

It has been a tough week.

Soon after the final, Carina commented

“Winning my first WTA title feels unbelievable. I’m so happy now; it’s been a tough week, a tough final today. I’m just happy. To play the last tournament of the season and finish the season winning your first title is just perfect.”
