The 36-year-old tech investor, Alexis Ohanian, was born in Brooklyn, New York. Ohanian was born to a multi-cultural family, with an Armenian father and a German-born mother. His grandparents are notable for transferring to the United States when his father was younger due to the Armenian genocide.
Ohanian attended the University of Virginia, finishing degrees in history and commerce in 2005. He initially thought of pursuing a career as a lawyer. This, however, changed because of a visit in Cambridge. During that visit, Ohanian attended renowned programmer Paul Graham’s lecture on how to build a start-up, which he eventually took seriously.
Family and daughter Alexis Olympia
Ohanian and Williams first met in May 2015 at the Cavalieri Hotel in Rome. They first saw each other because of an unfortunate seating choice next to the hotel pool. Their misunderstanding eventually led to Ohanian getting invited to Williams’ table.
Williams then invited Ohanian to the French Open to watch her play. To Williams’ surprise, he showed up and they walked around Paris for hours. That marked the couple’s first date ever.
In December 2016, Williams and Ohanian got engaged. The following year, Williams gave birth to their daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. Two months after giving birth, Williams and Ohanian got married in a wedding ceremony that was attended by a star-studded guest list including Beyonce, Kim Kardashian and Jay-Z.
Professional career and Reddit
After his graduation, Ohanian and his friend, Steve Huffman, pitched the idea for reddit.com, which they wanted to be the “front page of the Internet.” The investors from Y-Combinator liked the idea and became a part of its first batch of start-ups. With Reddit’s growth as a company, Ohanian continued working as part of its board of directors. Between 2015 and 2018, Ohanian also led the now-independent company with Huffman.
Apart from Reddit, Ohanian also launched and worked on Breadpig. Dubbed as an “uncorporation,” the company produces merchandise for geek audiences, with the proceeds going to charity.
Ohanian’s handprints can also be seen in the companies Das Kapital Capital and Hipmunk. Das Kapital Capital is known for doing startup consultancy and investment while Hipmunk is a popular travel search website. All these investments contribute to Ohanian’s estimated net worth of $70 million, according to Forbes.
The New Yorker also built a reputation for being an advocate of the Open Internet. In fact, Forbes Magazine tagged him Mayor of the Internet for this very purpose. He was influential in the overturn of the Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP Act. He also supported lobbying for net neutrality with the FCC.
