After his triumph in London, Stefanos Tsitsipas made all his Greek fans proud and a special one remained struck for the emotion: Marcos Baghdatis.
The smiling Cypriot is an icon of Greek tennis and he conquered the heart of many people around the world after his epic run at the Australian Open in 2006 where he reached the finals coming from nowhere. Later in the year, Marcos reached also the semifinal in Wimbledon to achieve a world no.8 career high.
Marcos’ great personality captured also the admiration of Stefanos Tsitsipas and they share a great relationship. It was touching to see Marcos visibly emotional when Tsitsipas won the ATP Finals. After his trademark smile, Baghdatis remained frozen and in the end, he didn’t manage not to shed a tear.
Marcos was among the top players that decided to retire this year and he was part of the farewell ceremony on Saturday with the likes of David Ferrer, Tomas Berdych, and Mikhail Youzhny. Baghdatis will definitely meet Stefanos in the days to come in Cyprus as the 21-year-old will spend part of his off season in there.
Lovely to see.
