Caroline Wozniacki is determined to go out with a bang, partnering with Serena Williams for her farewell match in Denmark.

The farewell match, which has been dubbed as “The Final One 2020,” will see Wozniacki take on her friend and occasional rival in her home country for the last time. The event will be held in the Royal Arena in Copenhagen on Monday, May 18 next year.

A statement for the much-awaited event said that Wozniacki set out to make her last hurrah through a memorable game with her friend. An estimated 13,000 people may be accommodated in the venue of the match.

Caroline Wozniacki’s surprise retirement

The 29-year old Danish player shocked everyone when she announced that she is hanging the tennis racquet for good after January’s Australian Open. Wozniacki, who has been a professional player since 2005, made her announcement on her official Instagram account.

In her post, she referenced how she wanted to build a life away from the tennis courts as she is planning to start a family with her husband, former NBA player David Lee. She mentions that the past few months made her realize that there are things that she wants to accomplish outside of her tennis career.

She, however, explained that her decision was not made because of the health issues she has been facing in the past few years. In 2018, she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. The illness prevented her from participating in a lot of the tournaments this year. This resulted in her world ranking to nosedive from no. 3 at the start of the year to no. 37 at the end of the season.

Wozniacki’s career

The world no. 37 was a major fixture in the WTA Tour for years. She was a former world no. 1, garnering total career earnings of more than $34 million. She brought honor to her country as she was the first Scandinavian woman to reach the peak of the world rankings. She won 30 WTA singles titles, two of which are an Australian Open trophy and a WTA Finals championship.

Throughout her career, Wozniacki has been written off multiple times because of her fluctuation in the world rankings. She struggled with her form and several injuries in the past few years. That said she had moments of resurgence, including a return to the world no. 1 ranking in January 2018.

Williams and Wozniacki’s friendship

Williams and Wozniacki struck an unlikely friendship during their respective careers. They have clashed in the tennis courts eleven times, with Williams leading 10-1. But that did not stop them from being close with each other.

The two were memorably spotted in Miami in 2014 after they lost in the early stages of the French Open. Williams was also one of the bridesmaids in Wozniacki’s wedding to Lee in June.
