Official statement from the tournament
The organizers explained the situation clearly: “The Brazilian tennis player João Fonseca will not compete in this year’s edition of the Bitpanda Hamburg Open. After arriving in Hamburg, the 19-year-old player felt mild discomfort in his right wrist. In consultation with his team, he decided to withdraw from the tournament as a precaution.”
Fonseca’s words on the decision
Fonseca himself addressed the withdrawal, emphasizing the importance of protecting his health ahead of the upcoming Grand Slam. “I’ve been feeling a slight discomfort in my right wrist since I arrived. With my team, we’ve decided it was best for me to withdraw as a precaution. See you soon at Roland-Garros!” he said, signaling his focus on recovery and readiness for Paris.
While his absence in Hamburg is a setback, Fonseca’s choice reflects a long-term perspective. Preserving his fitness for Roland-Garros underlines his ambition to compete at the highest level and avoid aggravating the injury. His return in Paris will be closely watched as he continues his rise on the ATP Tour.
