Istomin wins Chengdu title after Baghdatis retires

Unfortunate stuff in Chengdu where Denis Istomin wins the title after Marcos Baghdatis had to withdraw because of a problem with his back while trailing on a 2-3 scoreline.

What happened to Marcos?

After the final, Marcos explained what was his problem. The Cypriot commented

“I was feeling a bit of pain in my back during the week, but late after my match last night I felt some spasms. This morning I woke up a bit the same. After my warm-up, it got worse.

I’ve had back issues before, but not like this. Of course, I want to win the title, but not this way. I hope he gets better and will be okay for the rest of the season.”

This is Istomin’s 2nd career title after Nottingham 2015. Baghdatis was going for his 5th.
