David Goffin wins his 1st title of the season in Shenzhen after a hard-fought battle against Alexandr Dolgopolov in the final.

After winning the first set, the Belgian was trailing on a desperate 1-5 scoreline. Eventually, he managed to win 4 consecutive games and bring the affair at the breaker. Goffin was just 2 points from winning the match (5-5), but eventually, it was Dolgopolov to bring the affair to the decider. There was not much difference in the 3rd set with the exception of the 8th game when the Ukraine lost his service game at love. Goffin held the last game to clinch the match after 2 hours and 3 minutes. The final score was 6-4 6-7 (5) 6-4.

Why Goffin was elated.

This is David’s 3rd career title after Metz and Kitzbuhel. The Belgian has also reached 2 finals this year in Rotterdam (defeated by Tsonga) and Sofia (defeated by Dimitrov).  David had to withdraw from the Roland Garros after a nasty ankle injury and then he also missed Wimbledon.

David commented

“This one is really special because you know it’s always tough to come back from injuries. To come back from injury to qualify my country for the Davis Cup final and then to win my third trophy, it means a lot. I cannot be happier today.”
