Caroline Garcia wins the title in Wuhan

Caroline Garcia wins her 4th career title in Wuhan after winning a tough battle against a surprising Ashleigh Barty in the final.

The Frenchwoman had a fine run in China where she defeated Angelique Kerber in the first round before edging Cibulkova in the 3rd. The last contest of the tournament against the Australian was probably the most difficult to conquer. In fact, Barty was in great form for the entire event in Wuhan to beat back to back 4 top players after edging Jo Konta, Agnieszka Radwanska, Karolina Pliskova, and Jelena Ostapenko.

The final

Caroline was close to defeat many times in the final. In fact, the Frenchwoman was initially trailing on a 6-7 0-2 scoreline, and later Barty failed to serve out the match twice when leading 5-4 and 6-5 in the second set. Eventually, Caroline won the set at the breaker, and then she had an easier ride to the title in the decider. Garcia won this contest 6-7 (3) 7-6 (4) 6-2 in 2 hours and 45 minutes.

I am proud of my fight. GARCIA

Soon after the match, Garcia commented

“Right now, I just feel very happy and proud of my fight of today, proud of all the work we did. Sometimes, it was difficult for me after some good matches to keep it going. That’s what I did great today.”

This is Caroline’s 4th career title after Bogota (2014), Strasbourg and Mallorca (both in 2016).
