Why Federer may not play Bercy this year

Roger Federer doesn’t have a great relationship with the ATP1000 in Bercy. The Swiss Maestro tends to skip the event because it is too squeezed between the home tournament in Basel that he has won 7 times and the ATP finals that he has won on 6 occasions. Roger has won the title in Bercy only once in 2009, and he may decide to skip it this year.

Why Roger changed ideas

A few weeks ago, Roger stated that he would have followed his original plan and compete in Shanghai (8th of October), Basel (23rd of October), Bercy (30th of October), and the ATP Finals (11th of November). Federer had this schedule to compete with Nadal for the world no.1 rank, but after the US Open, Rafa had conquered an almost 2000pts lead over Federer, and the Swiss is well aware that it is improbable that he can bridge that gap in 2017. Roger will go and see what is going to be in Shanghai, and if he can win a considerable amount of points over the Spaniard, he might still try to chase the world no.1 rank.

What Roger said

After losing to Del Potro in New York, Federer stated ‘Now I have Laver Cup, Shanghai, Basel, Paris, and London. That’s my schedule, and it won’t change.”

Recently Federer changed a bit idea to say “Next weeks will be extremely important with Shanghai, Basel, maybe Paris and ATP Finals in London. My goal is to get to Shanghai early, maybe on Friday. Basel will take priority over Bercy.”

“[The world No. 1 ranking] became a little bit secondary for me as Nadal got far away. I will focus on myself, and I will play only when I am ready.”
