Kyrgios makes it even in Belgium

Nick Kyrgios had to work hard to keep his team alive in the Davis Cup semi-final against Belgium after Goffin scored the first point for the Europeans.

Goffin

David Goffin had to edge a sticky John Millman in the opening match. The Australian won the first set (7-6) after David failed to hold serve when leading 6-5. In the second set, Goffin had to recover a 1-break-down deficit (1-2) before winning 6-4. After a relatively smooth 3rd set that Goffin won 6-3, the Belgian had to endure a dogfight in the 4h set. Eventually, David found the solution at the very end when he broke John in the 11th game (6-5). The final score was 6-7 (4) 6-4 6-3 7-5.

Kyrgios

Also Nick didn’t have an easy one in his first match. After conquering the first set (6-3), Kyrgios had a horrible start in the second (0-3) before losing 6-3. Things got even more complicated for the Australian that lost the 3rd set at the breaker. That was enough for Nick that won the last 2 sets playing great tennis. The final score was 6-3 3-6 6-7 (5) 6-1 6-2.

It was incredibly tough

After the match, Nick commented

“It was incredibly tough. I knew it was going to be tough, especially on this very slow clay court. But I’ve done everything right.

I made it my objective this week to get a win for Australia. I’m just glad I got my team a win today. Hopefully, the boys can get it done in doubles tomorrow.”

The doubles

In day 2, the teams that should play the doubles should be Bemelmans – de Greef vs. Peers – Thompson.

This tie is going to be fun.
