ANDREESCU. At the beginning of the year I wanted to be ranked in the top100, now …

Bianca Andreescu says that she wanted to just break in the top100 at the beginning of the year. Her target changed dramatically.

Andreescu about her rankings

Bianca Andreescu is experiencing a meteoric rise especially after her latest US Open title. The 19 years old started the year as the world no.152, and she didn’t have the ambition to win a slam in 2019. However, Bianca’s initial target was just breaking in the top100. Then the Canadian sensation started to get more and more confident starting with her fantastic run in Auckland where she reached the final starting straight from the qualifications.

Even if Bianca hit some headlines with that performance, later on not many people paid too much attention to her. In fact, it’s rather typical having some unexpected results at the beginning of the season because many players are still rusty.

However, after a decent run at the Australian Open where she reached the 2nd round starting again from the qualifications, Andreescu won the title in Newport Beach. Then she reached the semifinal in Acapulco to finally become an “official sensation” after triumphing in Indian Wells. Bianca was so excited with her tennis that she did the mistake of competing in Miami even if she was nursing a shoulder injury. That cost her almost 4 months on tour, but when she was back in full strengths, she surprised again to conquer the title in Toronto and not the US Open.

Andreescu’s rankings

After this amazing run, Bianca will be ranked no.5 on Monday, just 11 points shy from Naomi Osaka. Even more interesting, Bianca will be no.4 in the year to date rankings with 4727 points. That means that she will be just a few points away from the no.3 Karolina Pliskova (4787 points) and Simona Halep (4792 points).

“At the beginning of the year I wanted to crack the top 100, but I guess I have to start setting my goals a bit higher. Let’s say, top three by the end of the year and, I don’t know, win the WTA Tour Finals.”

Also, in this case, it seems that Bianca’s target is not that high in terms of rankings. In fact, if she keeps on winning, she may well end up the year ranked no.2. However, the Canadian can end the seasons as the deserving world no.1 if she has a very good end of the year. In fact, the actual world no.1 of the year to date rankings, Ashleigh Barty, has “just”  749 points more than Bianca. Therefore if the Canadian goes deep in Wuhan, Beijing, and Shenzhen, she has a good shot at the top.
