Daniil Medvedev was the “great villain” of the US Open after he trolled the fans following his win over Feliciano Lopez in the 3rd round. The crowd was backing the veteran (Lopez), and they didn’t like when Daniil snatched the towel from the hands of a ball boy. After the match, Medvedev wasn’t nice with the fans saying practically that he won to despise them.
However, the Russian is well known for being an extremely nice guy off court, but he is not new to meltdowns when playing. Daniil didn’t have any problem to admit his mistakes and the fact that he regretted his action and the US Open crowd started to connect with him.
Daniil lost the US Open final to an immense Rafael Nadal 7-5 6-3 5-7 4-6 6-4.
Eventually the 23 years old received an amazing standing ovation during the trophy presentation of the US Open. Daniil was also appreciated for putting up an incredible fight in the final after he recovered from a 2 sets deficit before bowing only in the 5th.
Medvedev’s apology
Soon after the standing ovation, Daniil didn’t miss the chance to apologize again to say
“I know earlier in the tournament I said something in kind of a bad way and now I’m saying it is a good way: That it’s because of your energy that I’m in the final.
You guys were pushing me to prolong this match because you want to see more tennis and because of you guys I was fighting like hell.”
