Federer wins another awkward match

If you have hopes of Roger Federer winning his 20th slam at the US Open this year, you might be disappointed.

The Swiss Legend is definitely not playing at his best as he is clearing struggling with… something. After beating Tiafoe in an extremely weird 5-setter in the 1st round, Roger had to battle in 5 sets again against the world no.101 Mikhail Youzhny in the 2nd round.

The match against Youzhny

After getting a strong 6-1 5-3 lead, everything looked good and serene for Federer before things went sideways after Roger failed to serve out the set when he was on a 5-4 scoreline. After being broken at 15, Roger lost the set at the following breaker, and then he had to surrender also the following set (6-4).

The world no.3 found his groove again in the 4th set to grab a strong 5-2 lead, but he failed again to serve out the set when he was leading 5-3. This time Roger managed to break Youzhny soon after (6-4) to bring the affair to the decider.

The 5th set was affected by Mikhail’s conditions as the Russian was struggling with cramps. That was the final pass for Federer to the 3rd round. The Swiss finally won the match 6-1 6-7 (3) 4-6 6-4 6-2. The match ended after 3 hours and 8 minutes.

I have fun playing 5-setters. FEDERER

Soon after the match, Roger tried to play down his conditions to  comment

“This match wasn’t about the back, which is good. This is more just a grind. I felt different, completely different, the way it played and everything. But I’m really, really happy I got through.”

Next vs. Feliciano Lopez

Roger will face Feliciano Lopez in the 3rd round. The head to head is 12-0 for Federer, but given his conditions, this is going to be a rather tough test.
