It was well known that Angelique Kerber wasn’t playing in 2017 at the same level she was competing in 2016, but it was hard to predict what has happened on Monday. 

Angelique had to face an always dangerous Naomi Osaka that on any given day she can be an extremely dangerous opponent. Eventually, the Japanese demolished the German 6-3 6-1. The match was even for just 6 games (3-3), then Naomi won 9 of the following games to wrap up the match in just 65 minutes.

Naomi will face either Allertova or Peterson in the 2^nd round. It seems as the Japanese can go rather deep in this tournament.  Last year she lost in the 3rd round to Madison Keys after she squandered a good lead. This year it could be different.
