FEDERER: “I am really happy with my fitness”

Roger Federer has been enjoying a fantastic run in 2017 after he won 2 slams (Australian Open and Wimbledon), 2 Masters ATP 1000 (Indian Wells and Miami), and 1 ATP500 (Halle).

Roger looked invincible also in Montreal where he reached the final before he capitulated at the hands of Sascha Zverev also because of a nasty injury to his back that has been hitting Roger randomly for his entire career.

There were some doubts about the ability of Roger to compete in the last slam of the season especially after he decided to withdraw from Cincinnati. Eventually, Roger confirmed his decision to play at the Flushing Meadows, and actually he feels extremely confident with his fitness.

Why Roger is happy

During the pre-tournament press conference, Roger commented

“I’m really happy how I’m feeling.

Two weeks after the finals [in Montreal] is a long time, so because you’ve got two weeks you can take your time.

So, the first week was really just trying to feel better, get better, get back on the court at some stage. I have been on the practice courts since last week. There you have it.I have been playing sets the last few days, and I’m really happy how I’m feeling.”

Roger will face Frances Tiafoe in the opener. The head to head is 1-0 for the Swiss that has recently beaten Frances in Miami 7-6 (2) 6-3.
