Devastated Federer explains the entity of his US Open injury when facing Dimitrov

Roger Federer explains his injury and disappointment after his exit from the US Open

After his US Open loss, a devastated Roger Federer told Simon Graf (his biographer): “I have a good idea what the injury is. It’s something that will bother me today, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. Then it will be okay. That makes it even more disappointing that I didn’t find a way today.”

Federer and his nagging injury

The Swiss champion was utterly disappointed after his shock exit from the US Open after an upper back issue forced him to receive treatment ahead of the 5th set in his shock defeat to Grigor Dimitrov. The Swiss was very gracious in his defeat and congratulated the Bulgarian.

Federer looked out of sorts in the entire match against Dimitrov and lost it 3-6 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-2 disappointing himself as well his scores of fans the world over.

Ahead of the 5th set, the Swiss left the court to get some treatment on his upper back, he revealed: ”Well, I just needed some treatment on my upper – what is it – back, neck, just needed to try to loosen it up, crack it and see if it was going to be better. Yeah, but this is Grigor’s moment and not my body’s moment, so. It’s okay.”

When asked about the level of his disappointment, Federer said: “Just low. Just disappointed it’s over because I did feel like I was actually playing really well after a couple of rocky starts. It’s just a missed opportunity to some extent that you’re in the lead, you can get through, you have two days off after. It was looking good. But got to take the losses. They’re part of the game. Looking forward to family time and all that stuff, so… Life’s all right.”

Federer has not won the US Open for 11 long years (He won it in 2008). He is having some big disappointments over the last few months. He was hugely disappointed when he missed the Wimbledon trophy by a whisker to Novak Djokovic.

When asked if his narrow loss to Novak Djokovic had affected his performance, Federer denied it saying: “‘I mean, I didn’t think of it, if you move on, it’s a thing of the past. I do remember playing good semis there, so it wasn’t bad. If I think of that, I’m, like, really happy actually how I was able to play the last whatever, 15, 20 sets of the tournament. I know people read into it. They think, all that stuff. That is definitely not the reason why I lost tonight. I was ready to go, try my best. It wasn’t enough. It’s purely here tonight.”

It seems that the great Swiss player will have to wait a bit longer for his 21st Grand Slam trophy.
