Know more about Belinda Bencic's life

At age 22, Belinda Bencic could already be considered a tennis veteran. The Swiss tennis player, who stands at 5’9” (1.76 m) is one of the few players who currently rank within the world top 100 in both the singles and doubles categories. While she does not have the level of stardom that her contemporaries Naomi Osaka and Ashleigh Barty have, she has a lot of opportunities to reach their popularity because of her great skill on court and her personal appealing.

Belinda Bencic Bio & Personal Life

While she was born a Swiss citizen in the municipality of Flawil, her parents are both Czechoslovakian by blood. Ivan and Dana Bencic were both active in sports during their youth, with her father playing hockey and her mother spending time as a handball player.

This must be one of the reasons why they were pretty supportive of their daughter’s passion for tennis. In fact, Bencic was already trying to learn tennis by the age of two. Her father, who also plays tennis recreationally, helped train her for an hour every day when she reached four years old.

By age five, her father reached out to Melanie Molitor, former world no. 1 Martina Hingis’ mother, for coaching. A year after that, she spent six months training under Nick Bollettieri’s tennis academy in the United States. In a testament to just how much her father believed in her, he was able to convince entrepreneur Marcel Niederer to become her sponsor for her training and tournament fees.

Early Career and Professional Life

When she was 13, Bencic started what must be one of the most vibrant junior tennis careers in the past decade. On her first event, she was able to reach the final of the Grade 5 Luzern Junior Competition held in Switzerland. Two years after, she managed to bag the championship titles of the Open International Junior de Beaulieu-sur-Mer and Czech International Junior Indoor Championships, both grade 1 events. She became a former world No. 1 junior.

Even when she was still competing in junior tennis events, she also already participated in senior professional tournaments. By 2014, she already reached the U.S. Open quarterfinals and Wimbledon third round at the young age of 17. Because of this, she was named WTA Newcomer of the Year.

In the next few years, Bencic established herself as someone to watch. In 2015, she won the Canadian Open, defeating both Serena Williams and Simona Halep in consecutive matches. She reached her career-high ranking of no. 7 in February 2016. While there are times when her rankings greatly fluctuate, Bencic has now returned to the top 20 worldwide just as she was about to compete in the U.S. Open.
