Shapovalov: “My life changed in 5 days”

At 18 years of age, Deni Shapovalov has managed to become the youngest semi-finals in an ATP1000 in history. The Canadian was already happy with having received a wildcard for the main draw, and he electrified the crowd in the first round after he won a match against Dutra-Silva after he saved 4 match points. Eventually, that was just the beginning of an incredible week because soon after Denis defeated Juan Martin Del Potro in straight sets and then he beat Rafael Nadal after a sensational battle. The young Canadian fought till the semi-final when he had to surrender to Sascha Zverev in 2 tough sets.

Why my life had changed in 5 days. SHAPOVALOV

After this amazing performance, Denis will be ranked no.67 (he was only 144 before Montreal), and he has now the full attention of the media.

During the press conference that followed the match against Zverev, Denis commented

“I don’t even think I realize it yet; it’s a huge jump from 144 to 67.

My whole life has changed in the past five days. It’s crazy how it is. I go from being not known to being so known in the tennis world, in Canada in general. It’s going to be a little bit of a change to me. I’m going to have to adapt.

On TV, I wasn’t expecting to hear my name every two minutes. It’s like, ‘All right, guys, enough, enough. It’s quite a change going from just being a junior coming up to kind of now people consider that I’ve made the transition…  Regardless, this is one week. It’s just a small part of this season. I still have to work really hard. I still have so many aspects of the game I can improve.”

.. and about his family

Then Denis added

“Obviously it’s a little bit of a change for them, as well. My mom’s club is getting so much publicity because of this. They even had a bunch of news reporters come out, just randomly showed up. It was weird. They just had a camp. All of a sudden there are all these news reporters showing up. It’s a little bit of a change for all of us. But we’ll get through it together.”

Let’s hope that the kid will keep up. He has the right attitude.
