Federer survives Ferrer in Montreal

Roger Federer had to battle more than expected against David Ferrer to reach the quarters in Montreal. The Swiss sensation didn’t start the opening set in the best way to trail on a 1-4 scoreline. Eventually, Roger got that break back, but he dropped his serve again in the last game of the opener after failing to convert 2 game points.

Roger got an early 2-0 lead in the second set, but once again he dropped his serve in the 4th game (2-2). Federer won the decisive break in the following game to then conquer the second set (6-4). The decider was much smoother for the Swiss that broke Ferrer in the 1st and in the 7th game (5-2) before winning the match 4-6 6-4 6-2.

After the match, Roger commented

“From the baseline, I didn’t have enough rhythm. The court is fast here. Of course, because of the surface, that it’s fast, you can’t just decide to put the ball in because physically David is very strong. You can’t do that. You have to go into the battle. You have to accept you’re going to make mistakes. But you have to keep moving forward.

“I tried with my intensity and focused to change the match, and this is what I was able to do. I was able also to change the angles, and that helped me win the match.”

Next vs. Bautista Agut

Roger will play Roberto Bautista Agut for a place in the semi-final. The head to head is 6-0 for Roger (12-2 in terms of sets).
