Simona Halep has fantastic memories in Canada where she won the Rogers Cup in Montreal last year, and she was the runner-up in Toronto in 2015.
The Romanian needs to have another great run this year in order to defend the points gained in 2016 and then try again to conquer the first spot in the rankings later.
Why Simona is confident
During the pre-tournament interview, Simona commented
“It’s so nice to be back in Canada where I played very well in the last 3 years, and I had great results. So, I am looking forward to starting this tournament. I feel ready, I feel excited, and hopefully, I can win.”
Talking about Simona’s main target [being the world no.1], Simona commented
“To be able to be No.1 in the world means a lot; I wouldn’t know, I’ve never been there. I really want to congratulate her [Pliskova] because it’s amazing. In my opinion, she deserves it, because she’s won a few titles and made the US Open final.
I hope to make that position one day, but I don’t want to think about that. If it happens, I’ll be the happiest person, but I still have to work harder.”
Simona will play her first match against either Rybarikova or Lucic-Baroni.
