Makarova wins the title in Washington

Ekaterina Makarova conquers her 3rd title in Washington.

The Russian was extremely close to defeat in the final against Julia Gorges after the German failed to serve out the match when she was leading 6-3 6-5. Eventually, Ekaterina won the set at the breaker before Julia imploded in the decider. The final score was 3-6 7-6 (2) 6-0, and the match ended after 2 hours and 10 minutes.

I don’t know how I won this tournament. MAKAROVA

Ekaterina has won the last 3 matches after recovering a 1-set down deficit in each contest, but eventually she has always found the solution.

The Russian commented

“I don’t know how I won this tournament. I was starting every time so slowly, and not aggressive, but in the last moment, I was like, I need to be more aggressive, let’s try to do it!’ I think in this tournament, I was very good in my head. I didn’t give up.

I really believed that I could still be on the court, playing point by point and not thinking about the score. The third match, I turned around. I love this tournament, and I’m so happy I have this in my collection.”

Makarova will now head to Toronto where she will face Shuai Peng in the opener.
