Sharapova wins the 2012 Roland Garros and makes history

This tournament had a winner from the beginning till the end: Maria Sharapova.

The Russian Beauty was unstoppable from day one to lose an aggregate 5 games in the first 3 matches. She lost only 1 set at the tiebreak in the quarters with Zakopalova, and a part from that match no one managed to win more than 3 games in a set against Maria.

Yesterday’s match was no difference. Sara had a not so good start so as to handle a couple of games to Maria. The Russian did not even need that gifts since from her side she was already just perfect with very solid service and return games. The difference came from the winners: 37-12 for Maria. This stat offset the unforced errors where also Maria “lead” 29-11 (tipical stuff for a very aggressive player). It was quite interesting that the second set lasted 53 minutes even if the score was 6-2. This proves that Sara was not an easy opponent for Sharapova.

“I played better the second set, but still was difficult for me,” Errani said. “She won many points with the serve, with the return in the first two or three shots, so for me was difficult. I couldn’t arrive to play long points like I want to play.”

“It’s surreal. It’s the most unique moment I’ve experienced in my career,” Sharapova said. “When I won Wimbledon at 17, I thought that would be the most treasured moment of my career. But when I fell down on my knees today I realized that this was extremely special – even more so.”

“I had so many outs in my career. I could have said, ‘I don’t need this. I have money; I have fame; I have victories; I have Grand Slams.’ But when your love for something is bigger than all those things, you continue to keep getting up in the morning when it’s freezing outside when you know that it can be the most difficult day, when nothing is working, when you feel like the belief sometimes isn’t there from the outside world,” she said. “But you can achieve great things when you don’t listen to all those things.”

“I have a lot more in me to achieve. I believe in my game. I think that’s one of the reasons that that’s why I’m sitting here with my fourth one and winning Roland Garros, is because I always believed I could be better,” she said. “I proved that no matter how many punches I took in my career, I’ve always gotten back up. I never made excuses for me, not to myself, not to people.

“I have a tremendous amount of belief and pride in what I do. I love my work. I’ve always said this: I love playing tennis,” Maria added said.

Sharapova is back in style!
