Errani makes history. Sharapova beats Kvitova to become world no.1 – 2012 Roland Garros

Remarkable day at the Roland Garros where the 2 women of the moment grabbed a place in the final.

SHARAPOVA –  KVITOVA 6-3 6-3

Nothing really unusual here… it was another Sharapova’s domination. Maria is having an incredible tournament to beat another player as it was a stroll in the park. 77 minutes… done.. and … back to be the world no.1 spot. Easy, isn’t it? Well for Maria it looked so and she deserves it all. After an astounding start in her career she had to battle with a series of injuries and the fact that she could be a top model. Yes, being gorgeous can be nice for sponsors, but for a female tennis player can be a disaster (remember Kourniklova?). Maria throughtout the past years has been really good to keep her immense drive toward the “played tennis” and be back to the top spot of the world. Well Done!

ERRANI – STOSUR 7-5, 1-6, 6-3

Incredible Sara! She is ranked only world no.24 and she was in the most difficult quarter of the main draw. She reached the final beating players like Ivanovic, Kutznesova, Kerber and Stosur in a quarter where the top seeds where Radwanska and Bartoli. Nobody, not even Sara could have predicted this. She won 3 minor tournaments on claythis year (Acapulco, Barcelona and Budapest) but she was never at ease playing with the top players.

Yesterday she produced another upset taking advantage of Stosur nerves. As per the other matches, Errani had an inferior tennis compared to her opponents, but an incredible drive and astute tennis helped her to bridge the gap. Sam was as erratic as ever. After losing the first set 7-5 she thrashed the Italian with a clearly superior tennis. Then she melted in the third to concede a 3-0 lead to Sara with a serious of incredible unforced errors. The Australian managed to get back to her game to win 3 consucutive games and reach the 3-3 scoreline. That was an ominous sign for Errani that kept her nerves to fully taken advantage of another Sam’s meltdown and win the match.

“It’s incredible for me,” Errani said. “I didn’t expect it, and I’m here. So, I don’t know what to say.”Maybe my problem always was that I couldn’t believe too much to win with the strong players,” she said. “But now I beat three in a row. I’m in the final in a Grand Slam. So I have to maybe try to think a bit different.”

Can we have another Italian underdog to win another Roland Garros? Interesting!
