Daniil Medvedev’s journey to Indian Wells in 2026 became a story of resilience and improvisation. After winning the Dubai Tennis Championships, he and fellow Russians Andrey Rublev and Karen Khachanov faced the challenge of leaving the UAE amid escalating military tensions in the region. With air travel disrupted, the players had to find alternative routes to reach the United States. “It felt like a Hollywood movie,” Medvedev said, recalling the unusual circumstances.
Trouble at the Oman border
Medvedev revealed that his team attempted to drive from Dubai to Oman, but the trip was far from straightforward. Their driver misplaced his passport, forcing them to turn back after reaching the border. “Our driver couldn’t find his passport. We were the only ones who crossed the border, turned around and came back to the UAE. He found his passport in the parking lot and we drove to Oman,” Medvedev explained. The detour added hours to the already tense journey.
From Oman to Los Angeles
Once the passport issue was resolved, the group spent a night in Oman before flying to Istanbul. From there, they continued on to Los Angeles, finally arriving in time for Indian Wells. Medvedev described the experience as surreal, noting the mix of border crossings, unexpected delays, and the relief of reaching safety. “We arrived in Oman separately, and flew to Istanbul and Los Angeles together,” he commented.
Focus on Indian Wells
Despite the chaos, Medvedev remained determined to compete. He acknowledged the stress of traveling through conflict zones but emphasized his commitment to tennis. The ordeal highlighted the unpredictable challenges athletes can face off the court, and his ability to adapt under pressure sets the stage for a compelling run at Indian Wells.
