David Ferrer is arguably the strongest player not to have won a slam. The Spaniard has conquered 27 career titles after Basted, but the last triumph was back in Vienna in 2015.
In the second set against Dolgopolov, after winning the first set 6-4, Ferrer got a strong 5-1 lead in the second set. Then, the Spaniard didn’t convert a championship point on Dolgopolov’s serve and he lost the following service game (5-3). David wasn’t able to win another match point soon after, he lost that game (5-4) and he had to battle hard in the 10th game when he managed to conquer the contest only after 4 more match points. The final score was 6-4 6-4.
I was nervous at the end. FERRER
Soon after winning the title, David commented
“It’s been two years that I haven’t won a tournament, so I’m really happy for this win.
I was a little nervous up 5-1 and Alexandr played without pressure. I tried to be focused on every point, but when I had all those match points I was thinking too much.
“I am going week by week, match by match and I still have the motivation. I know it will be very difficult to get back to the Top 10, but if I stay competitive like this week, I will play next year for sure. I still enjoy playing tennis, but it’s different as I am 35 years old.”
This is the 3rd time that David wins this tournament after 2007 and 2012.
