We had two completely different doubles finals. Melo and Kubot won the title after conquering a match in almost 5 hours following an epic 5-setter won 13-11 in the decider. On the ladies’ side, it took just 55 minutes for Elina Vesnina and Ekaterina Makarova to exterminate Chan Hao-Ching and Monica Niculescu with a telling scoreline: 6-0 6-0.
From Vesnina
Soon after the title, Elena commented
“We were waiting for this title with Katya. When we lost at the French Open, we didn’t play a good match there at all. We were sitting in the locker room, I told Katya, ‘We have to win Wimbledon. We won French Open. We won it in 2013. We have to win Wimbledon.’
“It was our goal for the whole time that we’ve been playing. We had that close final two years ago, lost 7-5 in the third. We had it in our minds that we didn’t finish something here. We need to finish it in the right way.”
The Russian duo has won already the Roland Garros in 2013 and the US Open in 2014. The Australian Open is the only one missing!
MISSING ONLY THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN
